How to Create a “Categories” Dropdown Menu in WordPress

How to Create a “Categories” Dropdown Menu in WordPress

I wanted a “CATEGORIES” menu item in the Main Menu which will hold links to individual important categories pages on my personal website. Under Appearance -> Menus there was no option under Menu Structure to add new item called “CATEGORIES”. After quick search I’ve found a Jeff Chandler’s blog with a solution to the problem.

First go to the Appearance -> Menus and create new Custom Link with # in place of URL and the desired name for the menu link (in my case it’s Categories) and click Add to Menu.

Adding a custom link to the menu structure.

Now move the newly created menu item under the Menu Structure to the desired position.

Setting the new position in the menu.

Select the categories you want to include under the “CATEGORIES” menu item, add them to the Menu Structure and move them under the Categories menu item at children position (slightly shifted to the right).

Select categories you want to include under the Categories menu item and click Add to Menu button.
Move the newly created links under the Menu Structure under Categories as a children links.

Now just click Save Menu button and the new dropdown menu in Main Menu should be alive.

A look at the newly generated menu item “CATEGORIES”.
